Kia Ora everyone that is still following my kiwi adventures! I’d like to start by saying this post is very much overdue, but it’s officially the getting to the end of the semester and even in New Zealand that mean assignment/final time! So when I’d normally be writing my blog I’ve had to be writing business reports. Which ok I’m in business communications right now and I’m very glad I took this paper for one reason.. I know now I never want to be a part of business communications. Now this is completely based on personal preferences but I just feel it is so boring and plain. It lacks a sense of creativity for me and there’s to many rules and structures you have to follow. I’d much rather be spending my time editing photographs or doing something a bit more exciting. Speaking of editing photographs I’m excited to share I have officially finished my very on zine book for my photography class. In case anyone isn’t familiar with the term zine- it’s a booklet that is made to be easily produced and almost pocket ready. I’ve been working on my concept this entire semester and it’s done. I’m very proud of the final product too. I’ll put up the images I took for it in this post so even if you can’t get a hold of a copy you can still see it.
Another big project I’m working on but isn’t as finished as my zine is for my creative processes class. We had to write and produce 10 minute plays. I’d like to start by applauding any production major because I never realized how much work truly went into making a show come to life. I’d be lying if I didn’t say this whole group project has been a struggle though, but I guess that just comes with groups projects and I’m glad at the end of this week it will be finished. I wish I could show friends and family back home the production—would be a good laugh and it’s my first time preforming in something like this. My role is the narrator and it’s pretty weird hearing your own voice. I’m excited and nervous for it to happen, and on Friday night this week we’ll be preforming the pieces for a live public audience. Keep your fingers crossed for me!
I’m not sure when it will sink in that this is my last week of class and I only have about 4 weeks left in New Zealand—I know it sounds like a lot of time but it’s going to go by in a blink. With it being the last week of classes it’s a weird feeling, I don’t know how to describe it exactly but it just doesn’t feel the same way as it does when I finish a semester at SU. Lucky for me I still have two finals to take after my classes end, but unlike at SU we have an entire week to study for finals before they begin. It’s strange to have so much time, and I’m happy for the extra time definitely! My two finals are for Making New Zealand history and the other is business communications. Hope you still have those fingers crossed for me.
I’m trying to think what I’ve been up to since the last time I blogged. I’ve honestly been just enjoying each day of living life. I’ve developed my own routine for living in Welly. I’ve been bonding a lot with my flat mates and in particular my flat mate Christina. She is an international student from China but unlike me she will be at Massey for a full four years. We’ve bonded over our love for Walking Dead and have recently started watching American Horror story together (scary show). We’ve also come to realize our dinners always turn out so much better when we make them together. I’m so thankful for my relaxed flat mates. They’re all pretty great in their own way; none of us are best friends but it’s so much better that way because you can do your own thing but then if you’re having a rough day you can still talk to someone at home. This week I’m finally going to make them s’mores as a finals week pick me up!! Don’t know if I said this before but when we were talking about them my kiwi flat mates didn’t know if they were real. I just need to find some marshmallows, have been looking in the grocery store but haven’t come across them yet.
Besides just living life last weekend I had a pretty sweet as weekend with venturing to the Saturday underground market and checking out some art galleries, with my new favorite duo Will and Meg! Then on Sunday we took advantage of the nice weather and headed up to Zealandia. Zealandia is a native bird sanctuary and shaped up to be an awesome place to get up and close and personal with some native animals on New Zealand. This weekend was great because the park and the zoo opened up to the public for a small gold coin donation (less than US $1). This means I saved over $20 going this weekend. It seemed we weren’t the only ones to take advantage of this either because Zealandia was packed with people. It was nice though especially since there were a lot of families and it’s nice to have kids running around sometimes. I love hearing the crazy things that come out of children because it helps to remind me of the younger generations. When I spend too much time at Uni I feel like I lose sight of the childlike creativity and spirit.

I had more relaxing time of doing some homework, going to the Sunday market and I finally took a bit of a look around the Te Papa museum. Wow, just wow I couldn’t believe this place and ok don’t get me wrong I’ve been in the museum at least 4 or 5 times, but I’ve always went with a purpose. Whether the purpose be to listen to a speaker or check out a specific exhibit, but I haven’t just went and not really had a reason until this past Saturday. I ended up going and found this amazing international art exhibit filled with a wide variety of styles. One of my favorites I came across was a photographer by the name of Glenn Jowett. He is best known for this photographs of Pacific people and their cultures. Most of the pictures are from New Zealand and the Pacific Islands. What I loved the most of his work was his ability to capture real beautiful candid shots of his subjects. I don’t know why but I asked to do one of those audio tours of the exhibit, which actually was pretty cool. They had two versions for audio tracks you could listen too—one was for adults and the other was children’s perspective on the pieces and those children were hilarious. The exhibit was super family friendly and had a great deal of interactive activities. The museum itself is 6 levels so I didn’t have a chance to see it all but it’s on my list to see at least one more time.
